Our Lady Star of the Sea Church LOCATION Staten Island, NY SIZE 16,800 square feet
Our Lady Star of the Sea is a symbol of hope and a guide and protector of those who travel or seek their livelihoods at sea. This rapidly growing ministry is located on Staten Island, surrounded by water, greeting visitors to the City of New York. With standing room only for holiday feasts, sacraments and rites of initiation, this existing parish saw a need to expand its current 510 seat church to accommodate up to 1,100 worshipers.
While a small segment of the existing church has been retained, this essentially new structure was designed by DCAK-MSA, with the guidance of Monsignor Jeffrey Conway and the Archdiocese of New York. Designed in the basilical tradition of catholic churches, the high central nave rises to the height of a ve-story building. Light penetrates deep into the interior through the clerestory windows of the high nave. The Star of the Sea theme is echoed throughout the church in stained glass images and wood inlays.
