Holy Innocents       LOCATION  Manhattan NY   SIZE  2,200 square feet

Holy Innocents Church saw its mission to provide Christian education expanding with growth of the parish community and increased participation by adults. The growth was increasing the strain on their already overcrowded church as well. Given the limited site within which to expand, it was imperative that the new structure provide for the maximum amount of flexibility and functionality while fitting in seamlessly with the existing buildings.

DCAK-MSA designed a two-story, 2,200 square foot addition with four new classrooms to accommodate the increased enrollment. Movable, acoustical partitions were installed between the new classrooms to provide flexibility for a greater range of class and meeting sizes. There was no room to expand the church so a bearing at the rear of the sanctuary was removed and a large, custom fire rated movable partition was installed between the sanctuary and the parish hall, substantially increasing the seating capacity for large masses without expanding the building footprint.

The renovation included new ceilings, lighting and finishes throughout the school and parish hall. New, more vibrant colors and accent walls combined with better lighting enhance the entire interior. The brick exterior and bronze windows of the addition balances the rhythm and proportions of the contemporary church and parish center while pre-cast concrete arches and sculptural metal roofs add a traditional touch to provide a dynamic new entry to the upgraded center.
