Church of St. Pius X LOCATION Scarsdale, NY SIZE 9,800 square feet
Located in Scarsdale, NY, a vibrant town just outside of New York City, is the existing parish named after St. Pius X. The church is dating back to the 1950’s when it was located in a building intended to serve as a future gymnasium. DCAK-MSA worked closely with the parish to develop a design concept which paid close attention to details based in religious symbolism and functionality. The new Sanctuary provides a generous space for the celebrants to worship. The Sanctuary door was raised for better sight lines and visual connection between the Celebrant and the Parishioners. The Ambo, now moved forward, further emphasizes the central position of the altar. The Tabernacle was given more prominence with a backdrop scene of Ascension executed in stained glass. The Assembly seating was rearranged to focus on the Altar and to provide a communal feeling. The Narthex will expand into a day care area to provide space for a larger, social gather- ing space. The inclusion of the new Chapel in the Narthex area, offers solitude and reverence for those wishing to light memorial candles and offer prayers.
